The Road to Vietnam: Introduction The travels of a unique trio to Vietnam...
But it did! Huyen, her mother, and I made it official this year, and decided the trip was definite. We booked our flights, got our passports and visas, and got our immunizations. Here is a brief preview of the travellers and the trip.

Above you see the three travellers -- we each come from a unique background, which should make this trip quite interesting. Leftmost is Hien (Maggi) Campbell. She was born in Northern Vietnam, but most of her family went South. She fled the country in 1979 with her husband and Huyen. She speaks fluent Vietnamese and does quite well in English as well. She has been back to Vietnam numerous times since 1979. In the center is Huyen Campbell. She was born in Can Tho, Vietnam (south of Saigon) in 1976. When she was barely three years old, she fled with her mom and dad to the United States. She lived in California and Virginia. She has not been back to Vietnam since she left. This will be the first time she's met much of her mom's side of the family since she was three. Lastly is myself, Ryan MacMichael. I was born in New Jersey and lived most of my life there. I went to college at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA, where I met Huyen during our freshman year. Since then, I have gotten to know quite a bit about Vietnamese culture, though I still can't speak a worthwhile phrase. This trip will be my first out of the country. I'm more than a bit nervous, but I'm extremely excited as well. My special interest of Vietnamese culture lies in the Cao Dai religion. We will be staying mainly in Can Tho with Huyen's grandmother and family. However, we are also planning several trips, including Saigon (HCMC) and Tay Ninh. As a large coincidence, we will also be meeting up with a fellow MWC graduate who happens to be doing Internet work in Can Tho! We will see him for just a few days before he heads back to the states for the first time in nine months. I invite you to explore the site as it is and enjoy. Check through the links -- they are all wonderful. But I urge you to return in late July 1998 when the page begins to really expand with many, many photographs from Vietnam as well as a full story about our entire trip. Please write to me with any comments, etc.. Thank you so much for visiting. |
