An encounter with... Indigo Girls Sep. 1997

About the Meeting by Ryan A. MacMichael My girlfriend, Huyen Campbell, is one of the Indigo Girls' biggest fans. The same goes for one of her best friends, Katherine Hames. Needless to say, when the Indigo Girls came to Mary Washington College during the fall semester of our senior year, the two were psyched. Hames came up from William & Mary for the concert. Knowing that Huyen had quite a wealth of knowledge of the group, I helped hook her up with the Entertainment editor of the Bullet, Caroline Weaver. Huyen was put in charge of the interview for the paper. In addition, Natalie Illum helped to co-ordinate the interview on the radio station, combining the two interviews into one.
What I think I like most about the Indigo Girls is that their focus is not limited. Lots of artists are so damned focus on one "cause" in order to gain a niche, but the Indigo Girls are truly focused on a variety of "causes," and they are legitmately trying to spread a positive message. The other thing that impressed me was their diverse music interests. It wasn't strictly woman folk artists as you might expect, but included rap, reggae, and hardcore punk. Yeah, man... So, big ups to these two wonderful women putting out positive, creative music like no one else. Everyone enjoyed meeting y'all at the station, and thanks for signing our wall! Be sure to check out Katherine Hames' Indigo Girls page to read her account of meeting her idols. |
