twist of fait accomplis
There's been a lot of activity over in the Sifrit case archive, kind of surprisingly. Lots of friends and family of both the Sifrits and their unfortunate victims have been voicing their opinions on the case.
A piece of news posted by Ben in the comment section of my previous posted notes that "in court [on September 30], the judge ruled against Erika's attorneys motion to have the murder charges thrown out. Testimony given in the hearing indicated she was 'actively' involved in the murder but scant details." I assume this has something to do with what I read elsewhere about Erika having told Benjamin "Just kill them" (or something to that effect), which would no longer make her an innocent bystander. Read more here.
In addition, Benjamin Sifrit will now have a second defense attorney assisting on his case.
12:59 AMYou, forgot to mention people from Erika's hometown who never knew Erika are discussing this case. Many of us think they, SIFRITS, are responsible for some unsolved homicides in Blair County. Check us out at fredtalk.
Posted by: LN on October 5, 2002 8:23 AMState's Attorney Joel Todd made a few statements at Erika's hearing the other day which indicated that she may have even been the one to shoot either Geney or Josh. He said something to the effect that he was "walking a fine line" without openly discussing the contents of her Secret Service interview but that Benjamin Sifrit was charged with
"2 distinct homicides of 2 distinct people" and he was required to release any information to Benjamins attorney which may be exculpatory. Her attorney is opposing the release of the transcript from this interview to his attorney. The judge did not rule on it that day (he turned it over to another judge) but said that there wasn't an appellate court that could read this (transcript)and not think it negated or mitigated Benjamins guilt.
I still believe he will be found guilty of both murders, even if he only shot one of them and watched as Erika shot the other. I just think there is going to be a lot more coming out which will show that Erika's participation exceeded even this new info that she told him to go ahead and shoot. There is also some indication that the 3 questions she could not answer no to in her pre-polygraph interview were "Did you shoot either of them?" "Did you cut either of them?" "Did you plan their murders?"
Posted by: pj on October 8, 2002 2:27 AMI believe they should both get the death sentence, they deserve it. Don't go around killing people unless you are willing to pay the price. Truthfully they should be cut from there toes on up until they meet their fate, they don't deserve to get a life sentence and be kept alive by my tax dollars. Shouldnt my tax dollars be going towards helping schools, police, and other worthwhile programs --- why should my money go towards this? I believe the victims families live in Virgina so they won't even have to worry about the tab, I'm sure they werent thinking that at the time but would they like to personally put up the money to keep these two deranged people alive.
Posted by: Emory - Ocean City, MD on October 9, 2002 3:23 PMEmory...I'm not sure your comments even warrant a response but I feel compelled to inform you that the average cost of keeping an inmate in prison is well below the cost of the inevitable string of retrials and appeals born from capital murder convictions.....so your tax dollars are safe there big guy....
Posted by: BS on November 8, 2002 4:09 PMThis is all weird, I wet to school with Erika and graduated with her. The allegations in out town came up false I do believe. She would have been the last girl in out school that I would have thought would be in touble like this. Most of the people that knew hew also feel the same. She was from a well to do family, and seemed to have it pretty easy. But I guess people can change. Whatcha gonna do?
Posted by: Big Daddy on November 9, 2002 3:35 AMI think that they are getting what they wanted. Like Bonnie and Clyde. They are probably in their glory that everyone in America is talking about this case. I agree with chopping them up but the person that does it still does not have the right to do so. There are not a lot of options when you sit and try to think about what is right etc.. Nothing is right. The whole this is wrong and no one can make a judgement because this stuff just isn't normal. These people are animals and if they had fur, we would put them down.
Posted by: SMWH on November 16, 2002 11:13 AMLove this site! I first met Erika when she was in 3rd grade, but I can't say we were ever friends. Despite all the positive press her daddy drummed up after the initial newsbreak, most who knew Erika will admit she was a spoiled brat and never grew out of it. She wasn't nice, sweet, or innocent. She was incredibly intelligent, mean, arrogant, and manipulative. I obviously can't pretend to know what happened in Ocean City, and I admit people change, but I just want people to know not to believe all the press.
Posted by: Laura on November 21, 2002 10:36 PMThe one piece I have yet to hear about is the motive. Geney Crutchley was my aunt - and (as some have said) was a great person. Now, I realize she could have had a darker side, but even if that is the case, what was that darker side and what motivated the Sifrit's to kill? Was it money? Drugs?
Unfortunately, there is very little information available to those in the midwest about this...since the Journal went to subscription for e-news.
Posted by: Troy on December 19, 2002 10:46 PMSomthing that everyone is missing is the fact that for no good reason 2 people are no longer here do to the fact that 2 heartless people decided they did not want them around, and than brag about it to other people. Mrs Crutchley was not killed immedately like the papers say, and to butcher two people like that is calis to say the least. I hope that these two cowards spend the rest of there lives in jail.

Posted by: Ryan on June 11, 2004 6:59 AMFour years have come and gone since we bid a sad farewell to Josh and Geney. I never knew Geney, yet hearing my good friend Josh boast about her all the time I'm sure she was quite a nice woman. I've known Josh for quite some time. We served in the Army together. Josh served in the Airborne Infantry and Rocket Artillery and was a fine Soldier to say the least. One of the nicest guys I've ever met. After 8 years in the Army, in combat jobs without so much as a scratch; what a crying shame that his young life would be cut short while on vacation by oxygen thieves such as the Sifrits. I can only hope and pray that these two sick individuals will face judgement in the highest court of their maker and spend the rest of eternity rotting in hell.
Love and Honor. Miss you Bro.
