Change of venue sought in OC murder case
The state's attorney says the amount of publicity surrounding the case threatens Erika Sifrit's right to a fair trial and that it should be moved from Worcester County, Maryland. Benjamin Sifrit's lawyer is expected to make a similar appeal.
02:39 PM"The state's attorney says the amount of publicity surrounding the case threatens Erika Sifrit's right to a fair trial." How can this be a threat all the media's done is make her sound like a basketball playing princess that was intimated by her husband. I've known Benjamin since he was born and don't think he's been treated fair. She totally messed with his mind. Women do that ya know............
Posted by: Terri on September 12, 2002 2:47 PMNote that it was the state's attorney -- doesn't that mean the prosecutor? If so, it sounds like he may have been concerned about the same issues you mentioned, Terri.
Posted by: Ryan on September 12, 2002 2:53 PMYou should probably know the facts about Erika before you judge her..How do you know the person that you've known since hewsa born wasn't the one playing with minds! Men do that you know...
Posted by: Friend on September 12, 2002 7:02 PMI work for the Md. Coast Dispatch in Ocean City, and thought you all might like the latest developments:
On Wed.:
A judge shot down Benjamin Sifrit's motion to have evidence suppressed from the original search of the condo. Also, his lawyer did not plead him guilty on the burglary charges, which he told the court last week he planned to do. No reason was given, and his attorney didn't say he would not do it in the future.
Erika:
Her attorney filed paperwork Wed. to have the court force the District Attorney to live up to a deal made on June 2 that would take the homicide charges off the table. Her attorney and prosecutors agreed not to charge her with murder if she would testify against him, help them locate the bodies and take a polygraph. Before they hooked her up she must have told police something to give them pause, because they cancelled the interview and charged her with murder. Her attorney is claiming the deal was on the table and is binding even if they're not happy.
I knew Martha from work yrs ago. A kind and gentle woman that did not deserve this. I say they should execute both of the Sifrit's, but I was shocked that they will not receive the death penalty. Both need to be locked up without possibility for parole with the biggest meanest roomates the system has to offer.
Posted by: Derek on September 13, 2002 9:23 PMMartha is my cousin and this a tragedy for all of us in the family.... If they treated my cousin FAIR and not murder her and Joshua they would not need to worry about receiving a fair trial....I hope they do get the death pentaly for their actions.... I only pray that justice is still in the court systems.....
Posted by: Dixie on September 15, 2002 2:40 AMI went to high school with Erika, and I don't believe for a second the media's "perfect basketball-playing princess" routine. Let me just say that if her father didn't pay everyone off, and if they could open juvenile records people would realize Erika was not little Miss goody-two-shoes.
Don't get me wrong, I think Ben is a seriously screwed up guy, and I like the fact that someone like him is behind bars getting raped. I don't think he was completely innocent in this.
Posted by: Chris on September 23, 2002 10:39 PMChris: Wishing rape on someone, anyone!, is subhuman.
Posted by: Robert on September 23, 2002 11:20 PMIn court today, the judge ruled against Erika's attorneys motion to have the murder charges thrown out. Testimony given in the hearing indicated she was "actively" involved in the murder but scant details.
Posted by: Ben on September 30, 2002 6:03 PMNo torment is too small for these dirt ball Sifrits. May they suffer humiliation and pain every day for 60 years behind bars,.
Posted by: paul on October 2, 2002 11:21 AMI think they both deserve the death penalty/lethal injection what ever that state has to punish these vicious people for what they did to Josh and Ginny(Martha). Josh was my husbands best friend and it tore him apart to hear the news from a friend of the deceased. Benjamin is a very sick person and deserves to die. He disgraces the military for what he did.
Posted by: hanrahan on October 2, 2002 4:23 PMHas there been any mention of a possible motive for all this?
Posted by: Doug on October 3, 2002 9:35 PMI believe they should both get the death sentence, they deserve it. Don't go around killing people unless you are willing to pay the price. Truthfully they should be cut from there toes on up until they meet their fate, they don't deserve to get a life sentence and be kept alive by my tax dollars. Shouldnt my tax dollars be going towards helping schools, police, and other worthwhile programs --- why should my money go towards this? I believe the victims families live in Virgina so they won't even have to worry about the tab, I'm sure they werent thinking that at the time but would they like to personally put up the money to keep these two deranged people alive.
Posted by: Emory - Ocean City on October 9, 2002 3:24 PMI just now heard about this case from a friend of mine. I knew BJ Sifrit from High School. He always seemed to have a pretty bad temper, but I would have never thought. Now I also heard that he locked the other couple in a sauna, then came w/ a gun and shot them both..and later on came back and ripped their bodies up w/ his own hands, rinsed the blood away from himself and the body parts, then threw them away in a dumpster. Of Course, this is all "hear" "say" from a friend. Sorry for the Gore.

Posted by: John on October 5, 2007 2:17 PMWhat suburb of Houston did Benjamin live in? What high school did he attend?
Just curious, thanks.
After reading various police records and court documents, I believe that I have a fairly accurate and reliable account of the horrific events that took place that night. I believe that Erika and Benjamin Sifrit are equally responsible in these murders. While it was determined that Benjamin fired the shots that took Ford's life, Erika stated on several occasions that "I ordered him to go in the bathroom, and shoot them". Erika also admitted to helping her husband dispose of the bodies and clean up the condo. Prosecutors argued that, legally speaking, more evidence points to Erika Sifrit as the driving force behind the gruesome murders. The murder victim's driver licenses were found in Erika's purse as were 4 spent shell casings and 1 live round. Ballistic experts matched the shell casings to the bullets that were recovered from Ford's body. Police found the gun that was fired in Erika's waistband. Because only Martha Crutchley's leg was recovered from the landfill, authorities were unable to confirm her cause of death. I,personally find the details of this case spine-chilling and believe that anyone with such disregard for human life should be penalized accordingly.
