Let Amazon buy from you

Browsing Amazon, I noticed something interesting today... at the bottom of the page was the following note:

Ryan A. MacMichael, make $652.04
Sell your past purchases at Amazon.com today!

And "your past purchases" was a link to everything I've bought from Amazon in the last couple of years.

I was curious as to how such an exact number is calculated. Amazon, of course, has the answer readily available:

  1. Used items can be priced at or below Amazon.com's price for the same item. Because the condition of used items can vary greatly, we calculate the potential value of past purchases at approximately 70% of the Amazon.com price.
  2. We do not display items (such as toys, wireless phones and accessories, computer hardware, and most computer software) that cannot be sold at Amazon Marketplace.
  3. Used pricing guidelines are not shown for items listed as out of stock by Amazon.com.

I doubt I'll be partaking of this service anytime soon, but Amazon continues to amaze with the "little things." Now if they can just suggest some "Gold Box" offers that aren't power tools or toddler toys.

Half.com does something similar: They email you went someone Pre-purchases an item you just bought. It's so stupid!

I'm sure you've figured out that the Gold Box has nothing to do with your actual purchases. I was going along just fine, checking my gold box when it was there. I had to open an Amazon.com account for my company so we could order some software, and that account immediately had a gold box available - with nearly the exact same items I'd already been shown, even though the account had no order history. Since seeing that, I've pretty much given up on the gold box...if they actually offered things you might be interested in (they already have "recommendations") they'd probably get a lot more customers ordering from the gold box.

Yeah, I think the Gold Box is just based on overstocked items and such... and for me it seems like the exact inverse of what I'd actually order.
