twist of fait accomplis
Reader Pamela sent along a pair of interesting developments in the Erika/Benjamin Sifrit case.
First is the report that prosecutors will not seek the death penalty for Benjamin Sifrit, at the request of the victims' families. They feel that the death penalty is too humane and would rather see Sifrit spend the rest of his life in jail without parole. His trial date is set for October 8th. Erika's is set for September 10th, and because she gave the police information about the crimes and the whereabouts of the bodies, the prosecution will seek neither death nor life without parole. WBAL reports that there may be more trouble ahead for the Sifrits. In addition to being charged with the charged with first-degree murders of Martha Crutchley and Joshua Ford, authorities are investigating a possible link to the November 2001 murder of Dana Gates in Pennsylvania. Apparently, the night before the murder, the Sifrits were seen in the same bar as Gates. There were one or two minor similarities to the Crutchley/Ford murders. Right now, the Sifrits are considered "possible suspects."
12:15 AMThe death penalty is "too humane"? That's a novel way of looking at it.
Posted by: Robert on August 12, 2002 12:58 AMFew years in prison with a peaceful death at the end Vs. probably 60 years in prison taking it up the ass from big guys while waiting for a death from cancer or heart disease or something.
I'd agree that the death penalty can be too humane.
Posted by: Chris on September 23, 2002 10:28 PMI don't think Erika should be getting off like she will supposedly. She's just as guilty as Benjamin. Who cares if she cooperated with police? She had the gun that the bullets came out of. In fact from all the info that I have read I believe that she was the cause of all this. This whole situation really bothers me. If he gets life with out parol so should she.

Posted by: Sarah on October 3, 2002 10:02 PMI am certain she will get the same as Benjamin. She really has no alibi. But it's really hard to know who was responsible for all this? We really don't know who planned everything and what their motive was. I imagine that they will both receive the maximum punishment. I just wish I knew what they were thinking.
Posted by: Doug on October 6, 2002 12:55 PMJosh was my grandson's father - a good guy who served his country in the last Gulf War. I think he was in the wrong place at the wrong time - not an innocent by any means - but he never deserved this! My 9 year old grandson, Nicholas is devastated that he'll never get to know him.
Posted by: Carolyn Murray on April 8, 2003 3:38 PMThe Sifrits are from Hollidaysburg---not Altoona. The two of them are both crazy, but completely understood, despite said craziness, what they were doing. The Graces (Erika's parents)are just as horrible as the two murderers are for going to deceitful lengths to protect their daughter. They should be named accessories after the fact.
Posted by: Melissa on April 10, 2003 1:54 PMThey both are absolutely crazy. I bet if someone investigated all the places these two have traveled in their time together, they would discover more murders. They only go caught by accident in this one. There has got to be more. Check Vegas when they married and everywhere else they have been.
Posted by: Mindy on June 4, 2003 5:34 PMErika (Grace) Sifrit was a spoiled little rich girl. Her parents should be ashamed of themselves for blaming all of this on Benjamin. Even if she didn't do any of the killings, I cannot imagine even picking up a garbage bag that I knew had another human beings body parts in it. Her parents want to blame all of this on Benjamin but their daughter is just as guilty. Maybe the parents should have thought a little bit more before they pushed aside other young basketball players and cost some of these other players their basketball careers and their self esteem just so darling Erika could play basketball.
Posted by: Susan on June 10, 2003 4:03 AMI Just think that no one should defend either one. They are both equally responsible for there actions. I also think that some people are going to defend one or the other. Her parents probably knew she was guilty but still wanted to stand by there daugther. and same with his parents. If you were the only person your children could turn you would be there. NO matter what!!!! Well Just do not be bias. I also think that they were both sick in their heads. Anyone who would commit a crime or sit and watch a crime like this deserve to be lock up for good.
