Chocolate Labs can't eat chocolate because they ARE chocolate

Now you know: Why dogs can't eat chocolate. Most interesting: two squares of baker's chocolate could easily kill a 20 pound dog. (Mostly Harmless)

My parents dog got into the easter chocolate, and died from it. He skillfully unwrapped about a pound of hershey's kisses and it caused his liver to shut down, if I remember the details correctly.

My 85lb dog got into some chocolate the other day while we were out. She ate about half of a box of miniture candy bars (wrapper & all). She seemed o.k the first night, but yesterday and today she has been puking everything she's eaten. I'm hoping she's getting this out of her system. She hasn't shown the signs of jitteriness, so I'm hoping she will be ok!!!!

My Chocolate Lab ate a whole bag (about 1 lb) of chocolates I was going to take to a party. I accused my mom of eating them and not telling me because the empty bag was still on the counter. Later when I took the dog some water outside, I seen golden flakes in his poo. He never got sick, but I found out what happepend to the chocolate.

Posted by: Veejae on December 28, 2005 10:01 AM

If it's a single M&M and your dog isn't a teacup breed, than I suspect they'll be fine. Never hurts to make a quick call to your vet, though.

ATTENTION --

Please do NOT leave messages here asking "what should I do about my dog that just ate chocolate?!" The answer is simple: call your vet, call the emergency vet, something... posting a message on a 3 1/2 year old blog entry is not going to get you or your dog the help you need.

Posted by: Ryan on January 22, 2006 1:51 AM

If your dog has ate chocolate and he's small I would call a vet instead of putting it on here! Or if he ate alot of chocolate anysize, still call the vet!

Posted by: Casey on February 16, 2006 6:53 PM

Just talked to the emergency vet. Our 2 kids (labs) just ate 12 oz. of chocolate. We were told that this was not a lethal dose and we could give them about 1tablespoon each and after a 1/2 hour if no results (vomiting) we should repeat the dose. Hope this helps!! Make sure you call your vet 1st.

My 10 lb, 4 month old beagle puppy ate 3 miniature special dark chocolate candy bars about 3 hours ago. Shes been very hyper, drinking lots of water and looked bloated. I gave her 1 tsp of hydrogen peroxide and she vomited twice. Its 11:00 p.m. now so a vet probably can't help me anymore then what I've already done.
All these dogs/puppies on here that have consumed chocolate...how did they all pull through this disasterous event? Everyone is quick to come on here and beg for help what to do...it'd be nice to know if it works.

Posted by: Julie on November 30, 2006 11:03 PM

Just thought I'd follow up regarding my beagle. I put her in her cage for the night...next morning no diarrhea and she was and still is just fine. My son learned a lesson about leaving halloween chocolate laying around in his bedroom with a puppy in the house.

My dog is a 3 pound teacuo chihuahua and she some how found some chocolate and we don't even know where it came from but its looking like a Starbucks brownie. We don't know how much she ate but I saw her carrying it around and we don't have an emergency vet where we live so I have to wait another 6 hours to take her to the vet. I hope she will be okay.

My 100lb dog ate 1lb (16 oz) of fudge. I bought him to the vet within 1 hour. They induced vomiting and pumped charcoal into his stomache. They monitored his heart for about 8 hours. They said they got about a grape fruit size amount of fudge out of him. Fudge or bakers chocolate is highly toxic to dogs. They said he would have died from heart failure without immediate treatment.

If this is of any help. My 17 lb beagle ate 3 oz of Hershey's extra dark chocolate. She did not get sick. She was a little hyper, but is now back to normal. I was very frantic at first when I found the chocolate wrappers, but I kept an eye on her and nothing. I think it takes quite a bit of chocolate to make dogs sick, or even die.

I just found out that my step-dad has been feeding my 13 year old dog chocolate. I don't know for how long or in what quanities. Is there anything that I can do now? I am calling the vet in the morning. Please help. Cynthia

Posted by: Cynthia on March 7, 2007 1:03 AM

All - FEAR NOT!!! My 2 pound Chihuahua ate a few bites of pure cocoa (much higher content). If you have a small dog that ingested chocolate, within 30 minutes induce vomiting by giving them a cap-full of hydrogen peroxide and supervise them outside until they vomit. Try a tablespoon at least for larger breeds. After the dog vomits, immediately remove them from the vomit so they don't eat it and take them to another place to vomit again...repeat until they have nothing left inside the stomach - a few dry heaves should be the indicator. Then, take them immediately to drink water to rehydrate and eat normal food. If they do not voluntarily drink the water you must force feed it to insure re-hydration. After doing this, my dog was immediately better than ever. Good luck.

Posted by: Michael Klein on March 13, 2007 10:40 PM

I should note:

It's never a good idea to induce vomiting without being directed to do so by a vet. It can do more damage than good.

Posted by: Ryan on March 13, 2007 11:31 PM

My 3 pound yorkie ate about 4 g of chocolate and my vet recommended the hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. We gave him a childs medicin dispencer full and he began to vomit right away. The vomiting made him tired and thirsty but now I am not panicking anymore. This worked for mine because I found him eating it and called the vet right away. I would recommend asking your vet first.

Posted by: alexandria on April 9, 2007 5:12 PM

Contains info from vet: But call your own if at all possible - Don't RELY on this forum!!!!!!!!!

I have a 10 lb, 13 wk old beagle puppy who found & ate a square of Dove chocolate, perhaps an ounce? After calling the Emergency Vet Hosp, I was informed in a reassuring tone she would "be fine" - "it takes 3 ozs of chocolate per pound (of dog's weight) to make a LETHAL dose." No comment from them about giving Hydrogen Peroxide.
TOY breeds, Bakers Choc, & FUDGE seem to be MORE DANGEROUS -so please follow up with your vet! Online yellow pages may reveal a 24-hour phone # close to your area -Drum it into your kids and other adults to be VERY careful with chocolate! Good Luck everyone -and **special note for 'Mel' a few posts above - you are not funny, if I understand your comment correctly-about "wishing your dog would eat a pound". I'm sure your dog deserves better.

Just SHUT UP! SHUT UP! You were an idiot for letting your dog eat chocolate, and you were an idiot to all be asking Ryan if your dog is going to live or die. Go take the dog to a veterinarian, stay home if it costs 2000 dollars and don't feed your next dog chocolate.

At least you didn't mention horses have the exact same problem as dogs with chocolate.

Posted by: lindsey on July 26, 2007 5:48 PM

This has happened to me and the vet told me to give my dog 1/4 c. peroxide. She was 35 pds. I am sure you would give less to a smaller dog. But this makes them throw it back up and it happens REALLY quick! Give them a lot of water cause this will dehydrate them. Don't leave them in the heat for the rest of the day either. But all else your vet should tell you what to do over the phone. SO get you booty off the computer!

And for the record, I do not give my dogs chocolate EVER! This was a first time mistake that occurred. Any advice. I would be the first one to call the vet, but I'm in the middle of an ice storm. My English Springer Spaniel, Coco, ate a whole box of baker's unsweetened chocolate while my family was out during the day and she was dead when they got home at 3pm. They rushed her limp body to the vet and he said she died of Chocolate toxicity and was very bloated. She got it off the 3rd shelf of our pantry...she had chocolate before but it was a small amount of milk chocolate. I guess once dogs taste chocolate, they really love it and obviously she went out of her way to get it and we are just so depressed without her...she was the best dog in the world!
